INTRODUCTION

The novel about life in the 1930's in the southern United States. Covers a span of three years, during which the main characters undergo significant changes in their life. Scout Finch lives with her brother Jem and their father Atticus in the town of Maycomb, Alabama. Maycomb is a small, close-knit town, and every family has its social station depending on what their family had been doing, where they live, who their parents are, and how long their ancestors have lived in Maycomb.

SUMMARY

Atticus, a widower raising his children with the help from neighbors and a black housekeeper named Calpurnia. Scout and Jem almost understand each and every story of their neighborhood and town. The only person that was quizzical to them is Arthur Radley, (Boo Radley ), who never comes outside. When Dill starts spending summers there. the three children begin their mission of luring Boo outside.

midway through the story, Atticus is going to represent a black man named Tom Robinson, who had been accused of raping and beating a Mayella Ewell, a white lady. Scout and Jem have to tolerate plenty of racial insults because of their father's role in the trial. During that time, Scout has to hold back from physically fighting with other children.. Even Jem, the older of the two, loses his temper a time or two.

The highlight of this novel, Tom is convicted as guilty even though Atticus gives right enough evidence to proof that he have not committed the crime of which he is accused. In the process defending Tom, Atticus accidentally insults Bob Ewell ( Mayella's father). Ewell promise to revenge on Atticus and the judge for humiliating him.Shortly after the trial, Tom Robinson had been killed in an escape attempt.

Things did return to normal in Maycomb, but then Bob Ewell starts making plans for his revenge. Scout is in the Halloween pageant at school, playing the part of a ham and were accompanied by Jem. After some embarrassing moment on-stage, Scout decide to walk home with Jem.

On their way home, they heard strange noise but they though it was just some friends trying to scared them off.Suddenly, a brawl occurs. Scout which still in ham costume could not see anything but she hears Jem being pushed away, and she feels powerful arms squeezing her costume wire against her skin. During this attack, Jem badly breaks his arm. Scout gets just enough of a peek out of her costume to see a stranger carrying Jem back to their house and follow him .

The sheriff arrives few minutes later, announcing the death of Bob Ewell that have fall on his own knife. Scout finally realizes that the stranger carrying Jem is none other than Boo Radley, and that Boo is actually responsible for killing Ewell, thus saving her and Jem's lives.the sheriff refuses to press charges against Boo. Scout agrees with the sheriff and explains the tragedy to his father. Boo decide to see Jem for one more time and then asks Scout to accompany him home, but rather than escort him home as though he were a child, she has Boo escort her to his house as a gentleman would.

With Boo safely home, Scout returns to Jem's room where Atticus is waiting. He reads her to sleep and then waits by Jem's bedside for his son to wake up.
